About New York County Criminal History

Criminal records in New York County are divided among city agencies, state courts, and statewide repositories. NYPD holds police reports, NYC Department of Correction maintains city custody records, court clerks keep case files, and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services manages fingerprint-based criminal histories and the New York State Sex Offender Registry. This private resource is designed to help readers identify the right official portal, counter, address, or phone line without treating those distinct records as interchangeable.

Why We Built This Site

Manhattan does not follow the familiar county model in which a sheriff runs the jail and a county clerk keeps criminal cases. NYPD produces arrest and incident reports. NYC Department of Correction creates custody records only after a court commits a person to city custody. New York City Criminal Court and New York State Supreme Court, Criminal Term, keep different stages of the case, while the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services holds the fingerprint-linked state record. We organized the verified request steps, official search systems, clerk contacts, access limits, and fees so each question can be routed to the office that actually owns the record.

What We Cannot Do

This is a privately run reference site. We have no connection to any New York court, sheriff's office, police department, or state agency. There are real limits to what we can help with:

  • We cannot run an official background check or pull a criminal record for anyone
  • We cannot file record-sealing motions, FOIL requests, or any other paperwork on your behalf
  • We cannot issue certified copies of any criminal record, court document, or rap sheet
  • We cannot give legal advice or explain how a specific charge or case applies to you
  • We cannot promise that every phone number, fee, address, or agency procedure remains current

Only the issuing office, such as NYPD, a court clerk, NYC Department of Correction, or DCJS, can provide or certify its official record.

Search Partners

Third-party providers power search boxes that appear on some pages. Each provider controls its own results, prices, privacy terms, and service. A paid signup reached through one of those tools may generate a referral fee that supports this resource. We do not set a partner's charge or determine which records its tool returns.
